Two-alarm Barrhaven fire leaves several injured

Article content

Ottawa firefighters battled a two-alarm fire in Barrhaven for more than four hours Saturday evening.

The fire, at single family home on Swilken Burn, was reported just before 5 p.m. Callers said the home was pouring heavy black smoke, and that flames were visible.

Firefighters arrived to find the garage and home both fully involved. A working fire was declared followed minutes later by a second alarm that brought more firefighting resources to the scene.

At one point, firefighters were ordered to withdraw from the structure because of dangerous conditions. Several firefighters sustained minor injuries, but no other injuries were reported.

The fire wasn’t declared under control until 9:48 p.m.

An Ottawa Fire Services investigator has been dispatched to the scene to determine the cause and origin of the fire.

Provincial agencies were also on the scene Sunday as the investigation continued.
