It usually gets chucked in the bin – but the bottom of an onion can be reused in a simple way
A gardening expert has explained why you should avoid throwing away the bottom of your onions when cooking.
Not everyone has the space or time to grow their own vegetables at home, but there is a very simple way to make the most of your onions, and anyone can give it a go.
Simon Ackeroyd urged kitchen enthusiasts to keep hold of the base of an onion during meal prep instead of chucking it in the bin or compost, reports Devon Live.
He said placing the base of the onion into a dish with shallow water will encourage it to sprout shoots and roots within a few days.
Once the onion starts to show new growth, he advises placing it into compost, where it should stay for around a week.
“After a week, it will produce long green onion shoots”, Simon said. “These onion stems taste delicious in stir fries and salads”.
Fans were excited to try Simon’s tip. “I’ve got to try this,” one said.
One woman confessed: “I usually do this by buying an onion and ignoring it at the bottom of my fridge’s veg draw for about three months”.
Asked, whether the shoots were similar to chives, Simon clarified: “Not quite, but from the same onion family. Chives sort of taste similar to the green shoots I’ve grown in this video though.”
Another person was curious about how often they should water their plant. Simon offered the following guidance: “Start it off in shallow water, and after a few days, place it in compost and water every one or two days. It will be ready in about 10 days.”
