As the demand for autonomous vehicles grows, Lyft is taking the lead with its introduction of robotaxis, set to hit the roads as early as next year. This announcement comes just a day before Lyft is anticipated to release its fourth-quarter earnings, coinciding with Waymo’s preparations to initiate a commercial robotaxi service in Austin, followed by Atlanta.
Currently, the companies already operate robotaxis in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Phoenix through their Waymo One partnership.
On Monday, February 10, Lyft’s CEO David Risher revealed that the company plans to integrate Mobileye drive technology into its vehicles. The initial rollout will take place in Dallas, potentially as soon as 2026.
How does this develop Lyft’s earlier announcement?
Lyft initially revealed its collaboration with Mobileye for robotaxis in November 2024, and the company is now expanding on that partnership by specifying a location and timeline.
While Risher didn’t disclose how many robotaxis would launch in Dallas initially, Lyft’s executive vice president of driver experience, Jeremy Bird, informed TechCrunch that the intention is to extend the service to several cities following the Texas launch. However, he did not specify which cities are being considered.
