The 2025 National Bank Open in Toronto features an expanded 96-player draw over 12 days, aligning it closer to a Grand Slam format. However, this format has been seen to work less well for Masters 1000 tournaments this year, as they tend to drag on, and the action is far too sparse.
Canada also features a weak field with top players like Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, and Jack Draper withdrawing, meaning the tournament is wide open, elevating Alexander Zverev and Taylor Fritz as the top seeds.
The absence of these stars creates opportunities to grab a big title, as defending Champion Alexei Popyrin discovered last year, so Canadian hopefuls like Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov will aim to capitalise on home support.

Thoughts on the Draw

Top Half
Seeded Players: Alexander Zverev (1), Lorenzo Musetti (3), Holger Rune (5), Casper Ruud (8), Daniil Medvedev (10), Karen Khachanov (11), Francisco Cerundolo (14), Tomas Machac (16), Ugo Humbert (17), Alexei Popyrin (18), Denis Shapovalov (22), Tallon Griekspoor (24), Alex Michelsen (26), Alexandre Muller (29), Nuno Borges (30), Matteo Arnaldi (32)
In the top half, Alexander Zverev, the No. 1 seed and World No. 3, anchors the draw as a 2017 Montreal champion.
After a first-round bye, he faces Adam Walton or Benjamin Bonzi in the second round, with a potential third-round clash against João Fonseca.
Fonseca, an 18-year-old Brazilian, meets a qualifier first and possibly Matteo Arnaldi next, making this an intriguing early test for Zverev.
The German’s path could see him face 14th seed Francisco Cerundolo or 24th seed Tallon Griekspoor in the fourth round, with Cerundolo holding a 3-0 head-to-head advantage, including a recent victory in Madrid.
Zverev’s 2025 season included an Australian Open final loss to Sinner and a title in Munich, but his early Wimbledon exit highlights ongoing consistency issues, and it will be interesting if he comes out with a new game plan after a training block at the Rafa Nadal Academy with Toni Nadal offering some coaching.
A quarterfinal against Daniil Medvedev, the 2021 Toronto champion, is a possibility, though Medvedev must navigate defending champion Alexei Popyrin or Holger Rune in earlier rounds.
Medvedev, despite not winning a hard-court title since 2023, remains a threat due to his surface expertise, but it is hard to see him being a factor, having just lost to Moutet in Washington.
The top half also features a volatile quarter with Lorenzo Musetti and Casper Ruud, both battling injuries. Musetti, the No. 3 seed, starts against Shang Juncheng or a qualifier, with a potential third-round match against Alex Michelsen or Denis Shapovalov.
Shapovalov, fresh off a Los Cabos title, could exploit Musetti’s rustiness, drawing on his 2017 semifinal run in Canada.
Ruud, seeded eighth, might face Tomas Machac, who could capitalise on the Norwegian’s recent knee struggles, but he isn’t exactly known for his physicality.
Bottom Half
Seeded Players: Taylor Fritz (2), Ben Shelton (4), Andrey Rublev (6), Frances Tiafoe (7), Alex de Minaur (9), Jakub Mensik (12), Flavio Cobolli (13), Arthur Fils (15), Jiri Lehecka (19), Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (20), Felix Auger-Aliassime (21), Stefanos Tsitsipas (23), Brandon Nakashima (25), Gabriel Diallo (27), Lorenzo Sonego (28), Cameron Norrie (31)
The bottom half is headlined by Taylor Fritz, the No. 2 seed and a 2024 US Open finalist, who enters as a strong title contender after a stellar grass season. He did, however, just blow a 5-2 lead in the third set against Davidovich-Fokina over in Washington, so he will need to bounce back.
Fritz faces Camilo Ugo Carabelli or Roberto Carballes Baena in the second round, both clay specialists, offering him a favourable start.
A third-round match against Borna Coric or Canadian Gabriel Diallo could be trickier, with Diallo’s home support a factor.
In the fourth round, Fritz might meet Jiri Lehecka or Arthur Fils, both dangerous with notable 2025 results, with Lehecka reaching the Queen’s Club final, while Fils made deep runs in Monte Carlo and Barcelona before an injury.
A quarterfinal against Andrey Rublev, who boasts 11 hardcourt titles but trails Fritz 4-5 in their head-to-head, could be interesting.
A potential American quarterfinal between Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe adds excitement to the bottom half. Shelton, the No. 4 seed, faces Marcos Giron in the second round and could meet Brandon Nakashima or Flavio Cobolli in the fourth.
Tiafoe, seeded seventh, has a tougher path, potentially facing Cameron Norrie, Stefanos Tsitsipas, or Alex de Minaur in the fourth round.
De Minaur, with seven hardcourt titles (and potentially 8 as he is just two wins away from that in Washington) and superior movement, poses a significant challenge so he would be my pick to come through.
