Medvedev, despite not winning a hard-court title since 2023, remains a threat due to his surface expertise, but it is hard to see him being a factor, having just lost to Moutet in Washington.
The top half also features a volatile quarter with Lorenzo Musetti and Casper Ruud, both battling injuries. Musetti, the No. 3 seed, starts against Shang Juncheng or a qualifier, with a potential third-round match against Alex Michelsen or Denis Shapovalov.
Shapovalov, fresh off a Los Cabos title, could exploit Musetti’s rustiness, drawing on his 2017 semifinal run in Canada.
Ruud, seeded eighth, might face Tomas Machac, who could capitalise on the Norwegian’s recent knee struggles, but he isn’t exactly known for his physicality.

Fritz faces Camilo Ugo Carabelli or Roberto Carballes Baena in the second round, both clay specialists, offering him a favourable start.
A third-round match against Borna Coric or Canadian Gabriel Diallo could be trickier, with Diallo’s home support a factor.
In the fourth round, Fritz might meet Jiri Lehecka or Arthur Fils, both dangerous with notable 2025 results, with Lehecka reaching the Queen’s Club final, while Fils made deep runs in Monte Carlo and Barcelona before an injury.
A quarterfinal against Andrey Rublev, who boasts 11 hardcourt titles but trails Fritz 4-5 in their head-to-head, could be interesting.
A potential American quarterfinal between Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe adds excitement to the bottom half. Shelton, the No. 4 seed, faces Marcos Giron in the second round and could meet Brandon Nakashima or Flavio Cobolli in the fourth.
