The Ford Bronco New Energy range-extender SUV has been confirmed for Australia and is expected to arrive in local showrooms in 2027, joining the Ranger plug-in hybrid ute and the electric Transit and Mustang Mach-E models sold here.
While Ford Australia has yet to officially announce the Chinese-made model, a ‘Coming Soon’ page featuring an image of the Bronco New Energy went live today on the website for Metro Ford in Queensland, confirming the new SUV for Australia.
No specific details were provided, including pricing, model grades or powertrain options. However, the Australian model is expected to launch with an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) powertrain rather than the pure-electric version also offered in China.
An EREV uses a petrol engine as a generator to recharge the battery, while propulsion is provided by electric motors. EREVs already sold in Australia include the Leapmotor C10 SUV.
The Ford dealer’s post included an expression-of-interest form below an image of the Bronco New Energy with an illuminated front grille and Flame Orange paintwork. The model went on sale in China in late 2025.
Ford Australia wouldn’t confirm the new model for Australia when contacted by CarExpert.
“The Bronco New Energy is an exciting addition to the global Ford line-up, adding a new energy drivetrain to one of the world’s most iconic nameplates. Ford Australia is always evaluating options to expand our line-up for customers, but we have no news to share about future products at this time,” a previous Ford Australia statement said.
The Bronco New Energy is manufactured in China by Ford’s joint venture with Jiangling Motors. However, it won’t be the first Ford sold in Australia to be sourced from this part of Asia, with a Taiwanese-built Escape SUV offered locally between 2006 and 2012.
Despite using the Bronco name and similar exterior styling, the Bronco New Energy is built on a different platform from the ladder-frame architecture underpinning the US-made Bronco. Instead, it uses monocoque construction, like the previous Ford Endura and Territory large SUVs.
It measures 5025mm long, 1960mm wide and 1815mm high, with a 2950mm wheelbase, 220mm of ground clearance and a 600mm wading depth.
That makes it longer and wider than the largest SUV currently in Ford Australia showrooms, the Everest, which measures 4940mm long, 1923mm wide and 1841mm high on a 2900mm wheelbase.
The EREV powertrain uses a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine as a generator for a 43.7kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack, which feeds a 110kW front motor and a 180kW rear motor for a combined 360kW/600Nm.
Ford China claims a 0-100km/h time of 5.8 seconds, an electric-only range of around 220km on the CLTC cycle, and a total range of 1220km when the 63-litre petrol tank is also used.
As previously reported by CarExpert, the Bronco is expected to be offered in three model grades: Big Bend, Black Diamond and Outer Banks.
The Big Bend is priced from ¥229,800 (A$48,269) in China. This provides some indication of where Australian pricing could sit, with the Ford Ranger priced from ¥145,800 (A$30,652) in China and from $37,130 before on-road costs in Australia.
Similarly, the Ford Mustang sports car, which is imported into China from the US like the Australian-market version, starts at ¥389,800 (A$81,892) in China and $72,990 before on-road costs here.
Standard equipment on the Bronco New Energy Big Bend includes 19-inch wheels, LED headlights and all-wheel drive, along with synthetic leather upholstery, a 15.6-inch central touchscreen and an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster.
There’s also Apple CarPlay, 50W wireless phone charging, adaptive cruise control, a panoramic glass roof and 10 airbags.
The Black Diamond is priced at ¥249,800 (A$52,470) and adds selectable drive modes, leather upholstery and steering wheel, a 70-inch augmented-reality head-up display, and a 21-speaker, 1000W audio system.
The Outer Banks is priced at ¥272,800 and adds front and rear mechanical differential locks, LiDAR-based advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) with highway navigation-assisted driving, heated rear seats and a 7.5-litre heating/cooling fridge.
An optional pop-up camping roof package is also offered on the top two model grades.
