A ‘brilliant’ crime thriller now available on Netflix is reportedly a must-watch for fans of Ocean’s Eleven.

Those who relished the George Clooney and Brad Pitt-led remake or the Frank Sinatra original are likely to enjoy the heist film 21. The movie is based on the non-fiction book Bringing Down the House, which tells the tale of six students who swindled millions from casinos.

The cinematic adaptation hit screens in 2008 and was deemed a box office triumph, raking in nearly $160 million globally against a $35 million budget. The cast features Kevin Spacey as a respected professor leading a group of gifted students, alongside British actor and musician Jim Sturgess, Kate Bosworth, known for her roles in Superman Returns and Barbarian, and Josh Gad of Frozen fame.

Laurence Fishburne, star of The Matrix, also appears.

As per the synopsis, the plot centres around Ben Campbell (Sturgess), a brilliant student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who needs quick cash to cover his tuition fees. He joins a team of students who, under the guidance of unconventional professor Mickey Rosa (Spacey), utilise their mathematical prowess to win big in Las Vegas, reports the Mirror.

Lured by an attractive teammate and the prospect of vast wealth, Ben discovers that the stakes are far higher than he ever envisaged when he encounters casino enforcer Cole Williams (Fishburne).

Whilst the film didn’t receive overwhelming critical acclaim, it continues to hold a special place in fans’ hearts. This is particularly true for those who have recently rediscovered it on Netflix.

Many draw comparisons to classic heist films such as Ocean’s Eleven. One viewer sharing their opinion online wrote: “An interesting take on the Ocean’s Eleven style heist. Count cards, make it big and have a fairy tale lifestyle. Worth a watch!”.

Another viewer asserted: “Genius film. It has a nice story. I love this film as much as I love the characters. Kate Bosworth and Jim Sturgess are the perfect match for this film.”

Whilst a further comment read: “Such a phenomenal movie! This movie has been one of my top favourites since day one, my eyes are glued to the screen whenever I watch it. All the actors and actresses were amazing!”.

One viewer proclaimed: “One of the best Blackjack movies ever made. The movie is really straight to the point and well portrayed by the director. ” Meanwhile, another simply remarked: “I thought it was great and I loved the plot twist didn’t see it coming.”

Drawing yet another comparison, someone commented: “If you loved Good Will Hunting and Ocean’s 11, then give 21 a try. Take a brilliant mind and mix it with Las Vegas, and you get is an incredible story, that had a good mix of some drama, humour, and suspense.”
