HBO is finally ready to cash in on “Crazy Rich Asians,” officially ordering the long-discussed TV series that will reunite the cast of the 2018 movie, TVLine has learned. Henry Golding, Constance Wu, and Ronny Chieng will all return as series regulars, with Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh set to recur.
As far as the show’s plot is concerned, HBO isn’t ready to reveal too much, simply confirming that the eight-episode “one-hour original drama series” will “pick up after the events of the blockbuster film.”
Adele Lim, the film’s co-writer, will serve as showrunner of “Crazy Rich Asians,” executive-producing alongside Kwan, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, and the film’s director Jon M. Chu.
Based on Kevin Kwan’s 2013 novel, the “Crazy Rich Asians” film told the story of Rachel (Wu), a professor who is surprised to learn that her boyfriend Nick (Golding) comes from one of Singapore’s richest families. And Rachel’s introduction isn’t made any easier by difficult family members like Nick’s cousin Eddie (Chieng) and mother Eleanor (Yeoh).
The film’s ensemble cast also included big names like Gemma Chan, Lisa Lu, Awkwafina, Ken Jeong, Jimmy O. Yang, Nico Santos, and Harry Shum Jr., any of whom could potentially be announced as guest stars further down the road.
“We are so excited that Adele and the team behind the history-making film are bringing the next chapter of this story to life,” says HBO Chairman and CEO Casey Bloys. “Constance, Henry, Ronny, and Michelle are global superstars, and we know the passionate fans of the film and megahit novels can’t wait to see more. We’re glad to be in partnership with this talented producing team and cast.”
