There is something about Forrest Nolan’s “thank you i guess” that feels like hitting reset. The song is bright, jangly indie pop, while its video keeps scribbling over reality as it goes.
The San Francisco-raised, now LA-based singer-songwriter and producer released You Make Me Feel Alright in 2021, a debut project written and self-produced in the basement of his childhood home. Nolan also supported Gracie Abrams on tour across the US, and “Summer Vibe” has since passed 23 million Spotify streams. His second EP, i really like being here, followed in 2023.
“thank you i guess” opens like a Disney sitcom. A short comedy sketch introduces a boy meeting a girl at a party before the video cuts to black-and-white footage from inside the party itself. Fairy lights and a disco ball decorate the room, with an “indie” sign visible in the background.
Then the drawings start appearing. Sketched lines trace around the characters and speech bubbles appear over the shot. A guitar and amp are drawn over one scene, and elsewhere a cassette tape and a mushroom cloud show up against a wall scrawled with graffiti. At points, the live action disappears altogether and the cast become pencil drawings against coloured backgrounds.
Nolan’s vocal stays light and melodic over jangly, lo-fi indie pop, with syncopated accents hitting between phrases and giving the song its bounce.
Released on 29 April 2026 as part of the indie movie soundtrack project, “thank you i guess” was produced by Forrest Nolan and VITALS and distributed via Virgin Music Group. Forrest and Christopher Nolan directed and edited the video.
