If you’re always on the lookout for a good creature feature, there’s a new one crawling into theaters this fall that’s leaning into both horror and offbeat comedy.
Impractical Studios has dropped the first trailer for Don’t Move, a monster movie that throws a prehistoric spider into the middle of a church retreat gone horribly wrong. It looks like it’s aiming for creepy thrills with a healthy dose of weird humor, and the result is… definitely something.
Just to avoid any confusion, this isn’t the recent Netflix thriller with the same title. Don’t Move follows a church group on its annual retreat that takes a disastrous turn after they wander into the wrong part of the Ozark wilderness.
As members of the group begin disappearing one by one, suspicion initially falls on Ricky, played by Russell “Russ” Vitale, the troublemaker everyone already has their eye on.
Unfortunately for them, Ricky isn’t the real danger lurking in the woods. Hidden deep within a maze of webs is a massive prehistoric arachnid that doesn’t simply chase its prey.
It hunts by vibration, giving the whole setup more of a dinosaur-style predator vibe than your typical oversized spider movie. Every movement could be fatal, leaving the survivors with only one option… don’t move.
The film centers on Megan, played by Lyndsy Fonseca, as she tries to keep what’s left of the group alive long enough to escape.
The cast also includes Tom Cavanagh, Rob Riggle, Hunter King, Joseph Lee Anderson, T-Pain, Brian “Q” Quinn, and Matt Biedel.
The movie is directed by Maclain Nelson, whose previous work includes Vamp U, Once I Was a Beehive, Dudes & Dragons, along with a long list of television movies. The screenplay comes from James Murray, Nelson, and Darren Wearmouth, with production by Ethan Jack Berman, Murray, and David M. Wulf.
The trailer itself is an unusual experience. It goes out of its way to avoid showing the creature in a full, clear shot, leaving the giant spider mostly hidden despite the poster putting it front and center.
Then there’s the decision to use “I Think We’re Alone Now” as the soundtrack for a horror trailer. It’s an unexpected choice that gives the whole preview an oddly playful tone, making it hard to pin down exactly what kind of movie this wants to be.
Whether that mix of creature horror and quirky comedy works is another question. It feels like the film is juggling a few different ideas at once, and the overall vibe is pretty strange.
Fans of giant monster movies may still find something to enjoy, especially if they appreciate horror that doesn’t take itself too seriously, but this first look doesn’t exactly inspire a ton of confidence.
Don’t Move is based on the horror novel written by James Murray, who many fans know better as “Murr” from Impractical Jokers.
Impractical Studios is set to release Don’t Move in select U.S. theaters beginning September 11, 2026.
