I don’t know what it says about me, but every time Traci Abbott (Beth Maitland) shows up on screen, I feel my shoulders drop an inch. She’s the one person in Genoa City who isn’t scheming, isn’t sleeping with someone’s husband, & isn’t threatening to burn down a company out of spite. She’s just… there. With wine. With hugs. With the good kind of honesty.
The Glass of Wine Energy
Traci doesn’t do chaos; she absorbs it. Half of Genoa City could show up on her doorstep mid-meltdown & she’d just pour a glass of red, sit them down, & let them talk until they’ve figured it out themselves. No lecture, no judgment, no ulterior motive. That’s rare on Young & the Restless & honestly it’s rare on daytime TV period.

Even the Fabulous Lauren Fenmore Wants In
This week’s “honorary Abbott” moment with Lauren Fenmore (Tracey E. Bregman) proves I’m not alone in this. When Lauren asks if she’s earned Abbott status & Ashley turns it over to a vote, it’s Traci’s “aye” that seals it. That’s the whole appeal right there — being let into Traci’s orbit feels like being told you’re safe now.
The Hug You Didn’t Know You Needed
I’d take a Traci hug over half the romantic pairings this show has cooked up this year. She’s the emotional constant while everyone else is off having affairs, faking deaths, or stabbing family members with one of the biggest kitchen knives ever. Traci is proof you can be a legacy character without needing a storyline that involves a body count.
Why She’s In Demand
Genoa City runs on drama, so a character like Traci stands out precisely because she doesn’t add to it. She’s who you call after the drama, not during it. That’s a specific kind of narrative labor daytime TV doesn’t always get credit for, & Traci’s been quietly doing it for decades.
It’s not my first day watching Y&R, & it isn’t yours either. How many glasses of wine &/or hugs would you like with everyone’s favorite Aunt Traci?
