“We Have To” starts with a feeling of intrigue and mystery, haunting even before the guitar strings come in. The lead single from Zoe Konez’s album Everything’s Fine, released 12 June, it arrives on a single fingerpicked guitar line, recorded close enough to catch every shift of the strings, and stays there longer than you expect. Her voice comes in measured, and something about the combination sits with you the way a half-formed thought does, the kind you keep returning to.
Her voice soft and plainspoken to the point of austerity. We do these things / Because we have to / When the big bad wolf / Blows our house right in / We build back up. The imagery is borrowed from childhood but the feeling underneath it is entirely adult. Choosing your battles because the alternative is losing every one of them. The repetition across the verses is the sound of someone talking themselves into the next step, again and again.
“Everything’s Fine came from realising that the life I’d built wasn’t actually the one I wanted. It became a way of working through that confusion, and slowly figuring out how to build something that felt more truthful,” Konez has said. That admission sits directly inside this song. She writes, records and produces everything herself from a home studio in Brighton, and “We Have To” sounds exactly like that arrangement, no distance between the idea and the execution.
With over five million Spotify streams and a Netflix sync placement in Love Is Blind USA, Konez has built something real independently. The success makes more sense once you hear a song like this.
