1 dead, 3 injured in shooting after California high school graduation

One person was killed and three injured in a shooting at a Northern California high school where a graduation ceremony took place on Wednesday evening, authorities said.

Police responded to a shooting in the parking lot at Fairfield High School at 7:15 p.m., Fairfield Police Officer Michelle Belyea said at an evening news conference. One victim was pronounced deceased from gunshot wounds and three other were transported to a hospital in unknown condition, she said.

So far no arrests have been made, and there is no information available on any suspects.

β€œIt’s a very scary incident when something like this does happen, especially during the end of a school event,” Belyea said. β€œSo, obviously, we just want everyone to be safe.”

Alma Hernandez, mayor of Suisun City, Calif., in Solano County, reported shortly after 8 p.m. that there was an active shooter at Fairfield High School’s Schafer Stadium where the Sem Yeto High School graduation was held.

Amanda Prieto, who lives nearby, said she heard the shots from her backyard.

β€œIt dawned on me quickly how close that rapid fire was,” Prieto told local TV news station KCRA. β€œI looked over the fence and people were just screaming and running through the parking lot. It was horrific.”

The superintendent of the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District said that a shooting took place after the graduation ceremonies had ended.

β€œLaw enforcement is on campus, and … this is an active investigation,” said Supt. Jennifer Sachs in a statement. β€œOur thoughts are with our Sem Yeto community.”

Sachs said classes would be in session on Thursday, with a mental health team and district staff on site for support.
