Volkswagen has announced a full hybrid powertrain for the Golf Hybrid and the T-Roc Hybrid that will go on sale in Europe in the fourth quarter of this year. This is positioned between the mild-hybrid versions such as the Golf eTSI, and the plug-in hybrid Golf GTE, for the manufacturer to offer a wider range of electrified powertrains in addition to its battery-electric ID models.

The full hybrid powertrain sends drive to the front wheels, where two electric motors feature along with the 1.5L TSI evo2 four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

This works with a hybrid module that consists of an electric drive motor, a second motor as a generator, power electronics, differential and a single-speed gearbox with an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch to engage and disengage the ICE within the drivetrain.

The hybrid drive battery is a 1.6 kWh NMC unit located under the boot floor of the Golf Hybrid and the T-Roc Hybrid. There are three operating modes offered by the full hybrid powertrain for the Golf Hybrid and T-Roc Hybrid; fully electric, serial drive, and parallel drive.

Fully electric drive, as stated, is purely by the battery and electric motor with the ICE switched off; serial drive has the ICE running but not engaged with the driveline, serving only to generate electricity through a generator to recharge the battery, while parallel drive engages the internal combustion engine primarily, with the electric motor aiding propulsion when accelerating.

Presented last month at the Vienna Motor Symposium, pricing for the Volkswagen Golf Hybrid and T-Roc Hybrid has yet to be confirmed, though the hybrid duo will go on sale in the fourth quarter of 2026.
