Saturday Night Live wasted no time parodying President Donald Trumpβs polarizing Easter social media post about the Iran war.
The cold open kicked off with James Austin Johnsonβs Trump discussing the wording of the post with Ashley Padillaβs Karoline Leavitt.
βStart with, βOpen the f-ing Strait, you crazy bastards, or youβll be living in hell.β And then at the end, maybe throw in, βPraise be to Allah,’β Johnsonβs Trump said, which prompted Padillaβs Leavitt to reply, βYou think I should type, βPraise be to Allah,β and thatβs from you, the President of the United States?β
βYes, yes, Allah. Itβs a sarcastic attack on the worldβs largest religion,β he added. βThey famously have a great sense of humor about that kind of stuff.β
βAs your press secretary, this puts me in a tough position, sir,β Padillaβs Leavitt responded. βOh, donβt worry about that, Karoline. Like I said to Pam Bondi and Kristi Noem right before I fired them, youβre doing a terrific,β he added.
Trump went on to βmake some urgent phone callsβ amid βa lot of important things happening in the world right now.β His first call was to none other than Tiger Woods (Kenan Thompson), whom he reached while he was in rehab.
βHello Tiger, itβs Donald. Are you playing in the Masters this weekend?β he asked. βNo, sir. I donβt know if youβll remember, but I flipped my car and got a DUI,β the faux Woods explained.
βYou should have told the cops we were friends. They would have let you off,β Johnsonβs Trump said. βWell, I did, and they didnβt,β Woods said.
βIf only there was something I could have done to help. Oh well, wanna play some golf?β added Johnsonβs Trump. The parodied president received another call and joked that he didnβt recognize the number calling, and upon answering, it turned out to be his wife, Melania (played by Chloe Fineman), who was calling to get some advice on releasing a statement to say she was not one of Jeffrey Epsteinβs victims.
βYouβre calling me, thatβs not a good sign,β he said upon answering and realizing his wife had called. βListen, I decided I should do a big, random speech completely out of nowhere and say I am not Epstein victim. Is that good?β Finemanβs Melania asked.
βDarling, I gotta admit this sounds a little insane,β Johnsonβs Trump said. βWho are you, me?β
Melania continued, βWell, itβs not just Epstein. I thought I could also say, βI, Melania Trump, in no way helped out the Gilgo Beach serial killer.’β Trump argued that would βmake everyone way more suspicious,β to which Fineman responded, βWhat if I announce I barely partied with Diddy? Would that help?β
To close out the cold open, Johnsonβs Trump called Pete HegsethΒ (Colin Jost) to speak about the Iran war, who offered an update: βWell, rest assured, sir, Iran is as obliterated as me every Saturday night, allegedly.β Jostβs Hegseth then inquired if he was βactually negotiating with these herbs?β
βYou know what, donβt worry about the negotiations. I just heard theyβre going really, really bad,β Johnsonβs Trump said. βI sent in my secret weapon, JD Vance. After those Iranians spent 20 hours talking to JD, they said, βPlease, sir, just go back to bombing us.’β
Colman Domingo served as the host of the night, and he utilized his opening monologue to set all the vibes on set of the sketch comedy series. He began by recounting the past projects heβs starred in, arguing that βsure, Iβm an actor, but what Iβm most known for is when you come to my house, the vibes are spectacular. And tonight, Iβm gonna make you feel like youβre at my house. So letβs get a vibe going!β
The Euphoria actor began by adding in music, shifting the stage lighting and even adjusting the camera angle to set the mood. Jeremy Culhane also joined in on the fun, utilizing Domingoβs new setup, before the host went into the audience to make sure βthe vibe is working for our guests.β
The two-time Oscar nomineeβs SNL appearance arrived a day before he starred in the highly-anticipated third season of Euphoria. Next up, he will also lend his acting talents to the Michael Jackson biopic Michael, where he is set to portray Joe Jackson, the Jackson family patriarch.
The Sing Sing actor made his hosting debut on the April 11 show, where he was joined by Anitta as musical guest. There are only three more episodes left of season 51; Grammy winner Olivia Rodrigo will pull double duty on May 2; Matt Damon will host on May 9, alongside Noah Kahan; and Will Ferrell will lead the May 16 season finale, with Paul McCartney as musical guest.
