Luke Humphries responded by breezing past Ted Evetts on Saturday, while Stephen Bunting scraped through after a first-round scare against Sebastian Bialecki.

Van Barneveld, the Dutchman, was whitewashed 3-0 by Stefan Bellmont in his opening match, as the five-time world champion and former world No1 crashed out at the first hurdle.

Popular German Martin Schindler also won through his first-round encounter with Stephen Burton.

The 2026 World Darts Championship has an extended 128-player field vying to lift the Sid Waddell Trophy and claim the £1million prize money for the winner.

Littler recently became the new world No1 and is the strong favourite for another major title, having already won the UK Open, World Matchplay, World Grand Prix, Grand Slam of Darts and Players Championship this year.
