Carlos Alcaraz rallied past Taylor Fritz in a gripping 6-7(2), 7-5, 6-3 thriller in Turin on Tuesday, moving to 2-0 in the Jimmy Connors Group and staying on track for his maiden Nitto ATP Finals crown.

Key Match Highlights:

First Set (6-7(2), 52 minutes): Alcaraz built an early break lead but faltered on serve, allowing Fritz to dominate the tie-break. The American looked comfortable from the baseline and closed out the opener decisively.

Second Set (7-5, 68 minutes): Trailing 2-2, Alcaraz saved a break point with a 14-minute service hold in the fifth game, capped by a stunning rally and net charge for a volley winner. He broke in the 12th game after a net-cord return at 0/15, wrong-footing Fritz, converting his second set point. He saved both break points faced in the set.

Third Set (6-3, 48 minutes): Alcaraz seized control early, breaking and maintaining pressure with aggressive shotmaking to seal the comeback. He improved to 5-1 in their ATP Head2Head series.

Post-Match Quotes (Alcaraz):

It was pretty tight, I was struggling more than him in the first set. I wasn’t serving well, and I think he was pretty comfortable from the baseline, from everywhere… I was really relieved after the win because of everything I went through during the match. I wasn’t feeling the ball as well as I was in the first round, but I’m really happy that I found a way to come back and find weakness from him. Alcaraz on his win.

Broader Context:

  • Match duration: 2 hours, 48 minutes.
  • On the verge of knockout stages: Could have clinched SF spot if De Minaur had beaten Musetti later Tuesday but is still virtually qualified.
  • Year-End No. 1 race: Now needs just 50 more points to secure over Sinner (one RR win or better).
  • Next: Thursday vs. Lorenzo Musetti in final round-robin match.

Lorenzo Musetti (8) def. Alex de Minaur 7-5 3-6 7-5

Lorenzo Musetti kept his Nitto ATP Finals hopes alive with a dramatic 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 comeback victory over Alex de Minaur in Turin on Tuesday night, earning his first-ever win at the season finale and moving to 1-1 in the Jimmy Connors Group.

It was a high-quality match with a lot of great shotmaking and crowd involvement. Musetti started the strongest, but he faded in the 2nd, and when he’d dropped that set, it looked all over as he was running on fumes.

However, he somehow found a second wind in the final set, and after that brief delay due to a medical emergency in the crowd (why are they so widespread now?), he somehow got himself back into it.

Should de Minaur be losing a match like that? No chance and that’s perhaps why he has a 2-19 record against top 10 in his last 23 matches.

Key Match Highlights:

First Set (7-5, 48 minutes): Musetti rode home-crowd energy, striking the ball with weight and intent. He broke late to seal the opener, feeding off raucous support and showing renewed aggression compared to his loss to Fritz.

Second Set (3-6, 42 minutes): De Minaur raised intensity, dictating with speed and consistency. Musetti faded, struggling to find solutions as the Australian levelled the match.

Third Set (7-5, 77 minutes): Trailing 3-5, Musetti staged a stunning fightback. He saved match point while De Minaur served at 5-4, broke back after a 31-shot rally (featuring a forehand tweener), and won the final four games. He sealed victory with a forehand passing winner on his second match point. Musetti now leads their Head2Head series 3-0 in 2025 (also won Monte Carlo and Madrid on clay).

Post-Match Quotes (Musetti):

I was really struggling physically because Alex raised the level and intensity and I was really struggling to find the solution. But at the end with a big heart and big passion for this game, I don’t know from where, I started to feel better and play better and the support of the crowd is amazing. I have to thank them all. I am a warrior. I have improved a lot on the mental side and I am pushing myself to the limit because I am playing every match against the top players. The next one coming is against Carlos. I know how difficult it is, especially in these conditions. I will try to enjoy and fight like I did today. Musetti on his win.

Broader Context:

  • Match duration: 2 hours, 47 minutes.
  • Achievement: First Top 10 hard-court win in 2025; first Nitto ATP Finals victory.
  • Musetti’s 2025 stats: Career-best 45–21 record, finals in Monte-Carlo, Chengdu, Athens.
  • Group standing: All four players (Alcaraz 2-0, Musetti/Fritz 1-1, De Minaur 0-2) still in SF contention.
  • Next: Thursday vs. Carlos Alcaraz in final round-robin match.
