The US Open quarter-finals got underway on Tuesday with two heavyweight clashes that set the stage for an intriguing semi-final on Friday.
Carlos Alcaraz stayed perfect in sets, dismantling Jiri Lehecka 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 with a performance that showed just how much more complete his game has become in 2025. The Spaniard never faced a break point, winning 84% of first-serve points, and looked in cruise control throughout to reach his third US Open semi-final.
On Ashe in the night session, Novak Djokovic extended his flawless head-to-head over Taylor Fritz to 11-0, surviving a late push to win 6-3, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 in just over three hours.
For Fritz, it was another night of “what could have been”; missed chances in the second set, a double fault on match point, and more evidence that the mental hurdle of facing Djokovic remains immense.
For Novak, it marked a record-tying 14th US Open semi-final and confirmed a semi-final showdown with Alcaraz.
At 38 years old, Djokovic has now made the last four at all four majors this season, while Alcaraz remains on course for Slam No. 6. Their semi-final will be the 9th meeting with the Serb leading 5-3 in the H2H.

Carlos Alcaraz def. Jiri Lehecka, 6-4, 6-2, 6-4

Carlos Alcaraz powered past 20th seed Jiri Lehecka 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 to maintain his set-loss-free campaign.
Alcaraz is like a new player this season as he’s got far more consistent across the entirety of matches, and he dropped just 14 points on serve, winning 84% of first-serve points (38/45) and faced no break points in the one-hour, 56-minute clash.
While you can maybe question some of the calibre of his opponents, Alcaraz has dominated all comers so far in New York, and he looked a step ahead of Lehecka.
I can’t recall a spot where he looked in too much bother, with the only real sticky spots being at 0-15 when serving for the first set (he produced a brilliant point) and when serving at 3-2 15-30 in the second set, where he again came up with a clutch angled volley to avert two break points.
Lehecka played well enough, and he hit some huge ground strokes, but Carlos just soaked them up to get the job done.

Highlights
Novak Djokovic def. Taylor Fritz, 6-3, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4

Novak Djokovic outlasted fourth seed Taylor Fritz 6-3, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 to tie Jimmy Connors’ record of 14 tournament semi-finals.
The seventh seed saved 11 of 13 break points, including five at 5-3 in the first, in a three-hour, 24-minute battle.
At this point, it’s pretty much all mental for Fritz as he’s 0-11 in the H2H, and while he clearly has the game to bet Novak at this point in their careers, it’s such a huge mismatch psychologically.
2 of 13 break points converted and a double fault on match point don’t make good reading, but the key was the second set; the American had two break points in game four, dropped serve in game eight, broke back in game nine, but played a terrible service game to drop serve in game ten and then Novak served it out.
While Fritz won the third set and the fourth was close, his serve didn’t land at key moments and playing the most mentally tough player of all time, who has a 10-0 lead against you on the night, again proved too much of a hurdle for him.
Novak has now made the semi-finals at all four Grand Slams this season, which is unheard of at 38, and he’ll be glad to avoid going five sets as facing Alcaraz in the last four is going to be an uphill task.
Incredibly close match. It was really anybody’s match. I thought I was lucky to save some crucial break points in the second set. I think for most of the second and third sets, he was a better player. In these kinds of matches, a few points decide the winner. I didn’t feel like I was dominating today from the back of the court. In many of my service games, I was just trying to stay alive, fight for every ball. He was aggressive, staying close to the line. Not easy to play him. At the end of the day, winning matters, and I’m really proud of the fight that I put in, and I wear my heart on my sleeve always for this sport. I’m still enjoying it. Djokovic on his win.
