The verdict on Suits: LA’s future is out, and it’s not the one that favors fans. The cancellation of the series ahead of the first season’s finale came as a blow to fans who enjoyed Stephen Amell and his team’s efforts to save the firm. The spin-off came after the mothership Suits gained streaming popularity on various services and quickly got a pilot order from original show creator Aaron Korsh at the helm. Nonetheless, as per Jeff Bader, NBCUniversal’s President of Program Planning Strategy, the show didn’t show enough promise to warrant another season.
“Suits: LA had a very short run, but it really has not resonated [with audiences in] the way we thought it would,” Bader revealed. The series was another legal drama that followed an ex-New York City federal prosecutor turned Los Angeles entertainment lawyer, Ted Black, whose Black Lane Law firm represents powerful clients in LA while Ted and his associates navigate personal and professional challenges. Bader further explained,
“There can be many, many reasons why it hasn’t resonated, but it’s just not showing the potential to grow for us in the future, unfortunately. Those are the decisions we had to make.”
‘Suits: LA’s Cancellation was Carefully Thought Out
Along with Suits: LA and four more shows were cancelled, viz, The Irrational, Night Court, Found, and Lopez vs. Lopez. And none of these were cancelled lightly but based on their performances. “We had to look at the performance of the shows, both on linear and on digital,” said Bader. Terming the decision a “hard one” he revealed that some canceled shows were considered for a second life on Peacock, however, that did not come to fruition. “We had to see the ones that looked like they had growth potential in the future. We’re looking at how stable they are in their linear performance, how stable they are on digital which ones are growing, which ones are declining. And we had to make some hard decisions,” he revealed.
Suits: LA has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 39 percent while the audience score sits at 54 percent. In contrast the original Suits series has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 91 percent. NBC would have expected a similar response to the spin-off. The spin-off didn’t get the kind of momentum it expected upon its debut and did not improve much with the following episodes. Along with Amell, the series also cast Stephen Amell, Lex Scott Davis, Josh McDermitt, Bryan Greenberg, Maggie Grace, Troy Winbush, Azita Ghanizada among others.
Season 1 of Suits LA celebrates its finale on May 18. Stay tuned to Collider for more such updates.
