This Friday, April 25, Youth First hosts its annual prom for youth ages 12 to 18. The theme is Masquerade Ball, and the night promises an elegant and mysterious experience at Resource Center.
The prom is being held from 7-10 p.m. and is a free event for LGBTQ and allied youth.
In addition to the usual dancing, there will be catered food, party favors, raffle prizes, prom court nominations, and the crowning of a Prom King, Queen and Monarch. There will also be a magician this year performing close-up magic.
Youth First is one of the community groups at Resource Center specifically for LGBTQ youth ages 12 to 18. Because teenage years can be especially difficult for LGBTQ kids, the group aims to provide a space where teens can be their authentic selves, make friends, increase self-esteem and learn how to make healthy choices.
With schools becoming increasingly limited in the support they can provide LGBTQ students, Youth First is a vital resource. The group has weekly programming that includes queer sex education, gender identity, mindfulness and an art club.
This week, in preparation for the prom, the group hosted a craft night. Participants were able to decorate a mask or make jewelry for the event.
The Masquerade Ball is a chance for LGBTQ youth to experience a quintessential high school moment in a safe and affirming environment. Only guests within the age range are allowed, and there will be pre-cleared volunteers and staff that have all been through a background check and training process.
Youth First is committed to providing a safe and fun prom experience where differences are celebrated.
Organizers have ensured the event will be accessible. There will be a quiet area equipped with sensory items for any youth who get overstimulated easily, and ear plugs will be available.
There is not a strict dress code, and masks will be encouraged but not required. There will be disposable masks available at the event. The Dallas Public Library also has free lightly used prom clothing available for those who need it.
