Will Rohit Sharma continue to play Test cricket? Ganguly unsure before India’s tour of England

In the last Test series Rohit Sharma played, he scored just 31 runs at an average of 6.20 and was forced to drop himself.

Will Rohit Sharma be the India cricket team’s captain when they tour England for a 5-match Test series in June? This question has been asked for a little while. Some have even gone as far as asking whether Rohit would even play in England. If you are one of those who aren’t sure, well, worry not. Because former India captain Sourav Ganguly isn’t certain either.

Reports suggest that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will take a call on Rohit’s selection after the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season ends. That is still more than 2 months away.

Rohit Sharma’s poor Test returns

In the meantime, Ganguly has suggested Rohit rethink a few things. His performance hasn’t been great in the last 6-7 months. But the former Indian captain thinks Rohit hasn’t been great for the 4-5 years, at least when compared to his potential.

“What surprised me is his form in red-ball over the last four or five years. A player of his stature, his ability, I think he can do much better than what he has done,” Ganguly told RevSportz.

Facing England away from home won’t be easy. And unlike Australia, where Team India won back-to-back Test series, they don’t have positive results in England. The pitches will be tricky, and Rohit will open the batting, the most tough job you can find as a batter in cricket.

“Once this series (IPL 2025) finishes, he must put on his thinking cap because we have five Tests against England. That is going to be another hard series, like the way it was in Australia. It is going to seam, it is going to swing, and England are a good side at home,” the former Indian captain added.

Turn things around if not retiring, says Ganguly

Ganguly isn’t certain whether Rohit will continue playing Test cricket after the IPL 2025 season, but he wants the Indian captain to turn things around if he wishes to continue as the red-ball skipper.

“I am not surprised that he has taken the team to greater heights in white-ball cricket. But I do not know whether he is going to continue playing Test cricket. And if he is hearing me on this, I think he should take the responsibility of turning things around in red-ball cricket. India needs to find a way to perform better in Test matches, especially in England,” Ganguly added.
