A trio of area theater companies united for Black Broadway Summer

In a major announcement earlier this week, Circle Theatre, Soul Rep Theatre Company and Stage West announced a united front to bring Black Broadway Summer where each company will individually present three prestigious plays by Black American playwrights throughout Summer 2025. These acclaimed, game-changing shows were all on Broadway from 2022-2023.

The shows include:

Jun 5-8: Ain’t No Mo’ by Jordan E. Cooper by Soul Rep Theatre Company.

June 19-July 12: A Strange Loop by Michael R. Jackson by Circle Theatre.

Aug. 28-Sept. 14: Fat Ham by James Ijames by Stage West.

The shows had already been announced with each company’s season, but Soul Rep General Manager Ashley Oliver saw an opportunity when she saw three companies were going to produce some of Broadway’s latest hot tickets locally.

“I was in conversation with Jonathan Norton [Dallas Theater Center Interim Artistic Director] about Circle Theatre and their season. When I looked on their website, I noticed that they were doing A Strange Loop in the summer…then I remembered that Stage West is doing Fat Ham the month after that. I looked at Jonathan and said ‘Well, I guess we are going to have a summer of Black Broadway shows in Dallas and Fort Worth,’ she said in the announcement. “I felt really invested in making the connection with Stage West and Circle Theatre…and for all [of these shows] to be done this coming summer in DFW, is not something that happens too often.”

Circle Theatre’s Ashley White saw this as a unique opportunity to serve the North Texas community with great impact.

“We are all excited to be working together to provide DFW audiences a unique chance to experience works that challenge, uplift, and celebrate Black stories in ways that are both entertaining and transformative. These plays aren’t just shows—they’re conversations, reflections, and opportunities to connect on a deeper level. This summer will leave a lasting impact on our audiences, our theaters, and the communities we serve,” the artistic director mentioned in the release.

How to have a Black Broadway Summer? Easy. Buy one ticket to any of the three shows. You will then receive discounts codes for 20 percent off the other two shows. Use your codes at each theater’s box office or online when purchasing. Boom — Black Broadway Summer. The offer is good for up to four full price tickets per theater.

“These are three landmark plays in their own right,” Stage West Associate Producer Garret Storms added. “Each of them played on Broadway between 2022-2023, and while they had different trajectories, they all had a massive impact – both in the dialogues they created and on the American Theatre at large. It’s such a treat to see these three groundbreaking new American plays being produced this summer on local DFW stages.”

In its February newsletter from earlier this week, Shakespeare Dallas revealed the shows for its upcoming season. Not the biggest secret as the company announced the season during its Measure for Measure run at Theatre Three. But without much fanfare from Shakes D, the announcement is now official.

The 2025 Season includes:

March 15: Pub Crawl. OK, maybe not part of the stage season, but the annual Pub Crawl will be held in Bishop Arts with more details to come.

June 13-July 18: The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde. This romantic comedy tells the story of two men who assume the identities of a fictional man named Ernest. This leads them to fall in love and encounter an assortment of comical problems along the way. Directed by Jenni Stewart.

June 20-July 20: Othello directed by Montgomery Sutton. This production will get a modern twist and is set in an alternate history version of the 1990s in which the Venetian empire is the predominant political, military and economic power.

Sept. 19-Oct. 19: The Taming of the Shrew directed by Ryan Matthieu Smith. In this romantic comedy, the Shakespeare classic will be set in the Wild West.

Subscription packages are now available: three tickets (one for each show) for $55 , six tickets for $105 or 12 tickets for $200. Subscriber benefits include early entry to the park and preferred seating.
