  • New agreements planned to upgrade Ukraine’s border infrastructure and improve access to finance for Ukrainian businesses.
  • EIB Group-backed investments in public transport, energy resilience and social infrastructure to be highlighted during visit.

European Investment Bank (EIB) Group Vice-President Karl Nehammer arrived in Ukraine today for a three-day visit to advance support for economic recovery, infrastructure development and business financing in the country. The 20-22 October visit, which takes place amid intensified Russian attacks, underscores the European Union bank’s continued presence on the ground and unwavering commitment to Ukraine’s reconstruction and resilience.

Vice-President Nehammer plans to hold meetings with Ukrainian government representatives including Prime Minister Sergii Koretskyi and with EU ambassadors. The goal is to discuss priority investment opportunities and strengthen cooperation in support of the European integration of Ukraine.

The EIB Group aims to sign new agreements to upgrade border-crossing infrastructure connecting Ukraine with the EU and Moldova – a step that will facilitate the movement of people and goods. In parallel, through its European Investment Fund (EIF) arm, the EIB Group will strengthen its cooperation with Ukraine’s banking sector, including ProCredit Bank, to help Ukrainian businesses gain access to finance, maintain operations and preserve jobs.

The agenda will also showcase the tangible impact of EIB Group financing in Ukraine, including with the official delivery of new buses to the city of Kyiv and the reopening in the central Ukrainian region of Cherkasy of a school that was renovated after being damaged at the beginning of the war. In addition, the programme will include visits to EIB Group-supported businesses and critical energy facilities.

These activities will highlight how EU-backed investments are helping maintain essential services, strengthen energy security, support economic activity and improve everyday life for Ukrainian communities.

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the EIB Group financing in support of Ukraine has reached more than €4.5 billion to help meet urgent needs, maintain essential services and advance recovery and reconstruction in the country. With an expanded local team working in Ukraine, the EIB Group continues to strengthen its presence and deliver investments that support the country.
