Arthur Fils landed the biggest title of his career at the 2026 Cincinnati Open, defeating Frances Tiafoe in three sets to claim his maiden ATP Masters 1000 crown.
The 22-year-old Frenchman recovered from a one-sided second set to dominate the decider, capping an outstanding week in which he defeated Alex de Minaur, Flavio Cobolli and Tiafoe to lift the biggest trophy of his career.
The victory makes Fils the first French Masters 1000 champion since Jo-Wilfried Tsonga triumphed in Toronto in 2014 and firmly establishes him as one of the leading contenders heading into the US Open, while Tiafoe’s runner-up finish continues his excellent record in Cincinnati despite another near miss in the final.

Arthur Fils claimed the biggest title of his career, overpowering Frances Tiafoe in the deciding set to lift his maiden Masters 1000 trophy in Cincinnati.
The Frenchman made a superb start, breaking early and dictating play with his heavy forehand to take the opening set without facing a break point.
Tiafoe responded impressively, riding the home crowd’s support to completely flip the momentum in the second as Fils’ level dipped.
In the final set shootout, Fils rediscovered his best tennis. He came out firing in the decider, immediately re-establishing control from the baseline and giving Tiafoe no chance to settle.
The American’s level dropped sharply after taking a medical timeout before the third set, but Fils still had to execute, and he did, reeling off six straight games to seal a 6-0 final set.
I made Fils the 65/35 favourite heading in as he had already reached Masters 1000 semi-finals in Miami and Madrid this year, so it felt pretty likely he’d make that next step and become the first French Masters 1000 champion since Jo-Wilfried Tsonga won Toronto in 2014.
His forehand has become one of the biggest weapons on tour; he’s winning far more pressure points than he did a year ago, and he’s just a more complete player than Tiafoe, who had a very poor serving day. I also think Frances is pretty easy to ace, with Fils hitting 11 of them.
As for Tiafoe, he falls short in Cincinnati for the second time in three years, but it was a decent week for him. I don’t see him as a big-title player, especially with the sort of serve numbers he recorded today (only landing 39% of first serves), but if he can maintain this level over five sets, he should be in contention for the latter rounds of the USO given he’s made the semi-finals there twice and there’s no real standout players around at the moment.
