Y&R’s Abby Newman Abbott Winters Is Finally in the Room

Abby Newman Abbott Winters has been floating around Genoa City for years — beautiful, capable, completely underutilized. Lately though? Y&R is finally remembering she exists & it’s about time.

Running Society. Sitting at Jack Abbott’s family meeting at the Abbott house. Actually involved in a real storyline that doesn’t revolve around Devon.

Let me say that again — Abby in a storyline that has nothing to do with Devon Winters (Bryton James) & this fact could not make me more happy. 🎉

The Abbott Side of Abby

Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman) called a meeting at the Abbott house & Abby Winters (Melissa Ordway) was in that room. Not hovering in the background, not popping in for one scene — actually in the room where it happens.

That matters. Abby is an Abbott. Half her DNA comes from Jack’s world & for too long, Y&R has let that side of her collect dust while keeping her tethered to the Chancellor-Winters orbit.

Watching her at that Abbott meeting was a reminder of how much this character has to offer when the show actually lets her be both things she is — a Newman AND an Abbott.

Society Deserves Better & So Does Abby

Running Society should be a bigger deal than Y&R makes it. It’s a high-end restaurant in Genoa City & Abby is the one keeping it going. Last week, there were actual scenes of her doing her job — managing the place, being present, being competent.

Revolutionary concept for a character who spent years being defined by who she was sleeping with or whose baby she was carrying.

Victor Newman — Father of the Year, Except for Abby

Here’s where it gets frustrating. Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) will move mountains for Nick Newman (Joshua Morrow), Adam Newman, Victoria Newman (Amelia Heinle) & even Claire Newman at this point.

Abby? Victor thinks about Abby about as often as Nick thinks about Christian.

She is standing right there in Genoa City, running a successful restaurant, showing up for the Abbott family in a real way — & Victor Newman acts like she’s a minor character in his own family.

The Verdict

Abby Newman Abbott deserves a full storyline that’s hers. Not Devon’s. Not Victor’s. Not a baby storyline. HERS.

The Patty Williams situation is pulling her into Abbott family drama & that’s exactly the kind of story that lets this character breathe. Keep it coming, Y&R, but for the love of God, please end this storyline with Diane Jenkins (Susan Walters) being kidnapped & Patty Williams living inside the Abbott Home.

At least the rest of Genoa City finally sees Abby. Victor will catch up eventually.
