Day Five at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters saw the top seeds progress to the quarter-finals, though not without some bumps along the way.
Less than 24 hours after I proclaimed that Sincaraz were a cut above the rest on clay, both Carlos and Jannik dropped a set in their Round of 16 matches; although both came through solidly in the end.
Defending champion Alcaraz fought back from a messy, error-filled second set (23 unforced errors) to beat Tomas Martin Etcheverry, while Sinner surrendered his first Masters 1000 set since October but regrouped well against Tomas Machac.
Joao Fonseca stole the headlines, reaching his first ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final with a convincing straight-sets win over Matteo Berrettini.
Here are the key results and quick recaps from an entertaining Day 5 in Monaco:

Quick Recap

Carlos Alcaraz (1) def. Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-1 4-6 6-3
Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz battled back from a shaky second set (where he committed 23 unforced errors) to secure a hard-fought victory and return to the quarter-finals.
After a dominant opener, Alcaraz regrouped in the decider to stretch his winning streak at Monte-Carlo to seven matches. Heβll face eighth seed Alexander Bublik in the last eight.
Joao Fonseca def. Matteo Berrettini (WC) 6-3 6-2
Joao Fonseca continued his run, reaching his first ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final with a commanding straight-sets win over Matteo Berrettini.
Fonseca played with high intensity and precision, becoming the first Brazilian to reach this stage at a Masters 1000 since 2011 (and the youngest man to do so in Monte-Carlo since Nadal and Gasquet in 2005). Heβll face Alexander Zverev next.
Berrettini had looked unplayable when he double-bagelled Medvedev, but today his serve never got going.
Alexander Zverev (3) def. Zizou Bergs 6-2 7-5
Alexander Zverev looked much sharper than in his previous round, cruising through the first set and recovering after failing to serve out the match to reach the Monte-Carlo quarter-finals for the first time since 2022.
Typical Zverev failing to close out matches (if you canβt do it against Garin and Bergs, then itβs unlikely to happen against the Elite).
Jannik Sinner (2) def. TomΓ‘Ε‘ MachaΔ 6-1 6-7(3) 6-3
Jannik Sinner dropped his first set at a Masters 1000 event since October but still advanced comfortably in the end.
After cruising in the opener and fighting back from 2-5 down in the second, Sinner regrouped in the decider to keep his title hopes (and No. 1 ranking ambitions) alive. Heβll face Felix Auger-Aliassime in the quarter-finals.
Alexander Bublik (8) def. Jiri Lehecka (11) 6-2 7-5
Alexander Bublik produced a stylish performance, channelling his trademark variety (including a stunning one-handed backhand winner) to reach his first Monte-Carlo quarter-final.
Felix Auger-Aliassime (6) def. Casper Ruud (9) 7-5 2-2 ret.
Felix Auger-Aliassime advanced to the quarter-finals when ninth seed Casper Ruud was forced to retire while trailing 7-5, 2-2. Auger-Aliassime will now face Jannik Sinner.
Ruudβs injury looked like a calf issue, so we will see if it keeps him out of any of his scheduled clay-court events.
