They Royal Family is facing a bigger crisis over Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor than the abdication of Edward VII, it has been claimed. The former Duke of York has been banished into exile in Norfolk after further details of his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein emerged within the latest tranche of documents released by the US Department of Justice about the convicted paedophile.
Andrew, who has also been stripped of his titles and honours, has repeatedly strongly denied any wrongdoing in relation to Epstein. But Andrew Lownie, the author of the former prince’s biography, said the former duke of York had caused greater public anger than when Edward VII abdicated in 1936 after less than a year as monarch. Speaking at Oxford Literary Festival, Mr Lownie said Edward’s abdication was a “three-day wonder” and that, at the time, the public did not engage with the full details of the bombshell incident, but that the crisis surrounding Andrew and his links to Epstein has caused a deeper royal crisis.
