ATP Finals 2025 Day Two Recap

Day two of the 2025 Nitto ATP Finals followed a similar script to yesterday’s opener, with the higher-ranked players making light work in their round robin matches.

Taylor Fritz handled debutant Lorenzo Musetti with rock-solid hitting, serving big and striking cleanly to silence the home crowd and make a winning start in the Jimmy Connors Group.

Later in the evening, defending champion Jannik Sinner restored Italian pride in emphatic fashion, dismantling Felix Auger-Aliassime to extend his indoor winning streak to 27 matches.

Fritz will have to do it all again tomorrow as the schedule was changed due to Musetti’s late arrival from Athens, which isn’t ideal for the American.

Taylor Fritz kicked off his 2025 Nitto ATP Finals campaign with a dominant 6-3, 6-4 victory over Lorenzo Musetti in Turin on Monday, spoiling the Italian’s debut and improving to 1-0 in the Jimmy Connors Group.

On a quicker indoor court, Fritz really has the edge with his serve and forehand. Musetti came up with some nice shots and plenty of flair, but he lacks the experience of playing on quicker indoor surfaces over the winter (a la Federer) as a junior. As a result, it’s no surprise that indoors is statistically his worst surface in terms of win-loss record.

Key Match Highlights:

First Set (6-3, 38 minutes): Fritz seized control early, stepping inside the baseline to take the ball on the rise and redirecting Musetti’s pace. The American saved four break points in the third game with clutch serving and broke in the next en route to closing out the opener efficiently.

Second Set (6-4, 65 minutes): Fritz broke at 1-1 after Musetti double-faulted twice from 40/30 and pushed a backhand wide on break point. After not converting a match point on Musetti’s serve, he stayed composed, rallying from 0/30 at 5-4 to serve it out.

Post-Match Quotes (Fritz):

I am really happy. I thought I did many things really well. I did a great job early on in the match, serving my way out of trouble and saving some break points. I played well in the second set and had numerous chances to break, but I didn’t capitalise on them. I am really happy I was able to serve it out there, and it didn’t come back to ruin it. Every time I come here, I like the conditions, and it is very easy to get motivated. You can lock in, it is the last tournament of the year, and it is the ATP Finals, it is a big deal. Frit on his win.

Broader Context:

  • Match duration: 1 hour, 43 minutes.
  • Second set: Fritz only lost 3 points on serve in the set, 2 in the final game.
  • Fritz’s 2025 stats: 52-21 record, titles in Eastbourne and Stuttgart.
  • Preparation edge: Arrived in Turin a week early; Musetti landed Sunday after losing the Athens final to Djokovic.
  • Next: Round-robin match vs. Carlos Alcaraz on Tuesday.

Highlights

Jannik Sinner (2) def. Felix Auger-Aliassime (7) 7-5 6-1

Jannik Sinner kicked off his 2025 Nitto ATP Finals title defence with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Felix Auger-Aliassime on Monday evening, aided by the Canadian battling a left calf injury from the end of the first set onwards.

Sinner was as clinical as ever, but in the early stages, Felix offered some decent resistance, maintaining his position on the baseline and going for his shots.

However, once he tweaked his calf, it was all over as he struggled to really push off on that leg. To his credit, he stuck it out until the end, but based on that, I think we’ll be seeing Bublik step in to play the remainder of the round-robin matches.

Sinner extends his indoor winning streak to 27 matches and hasn’t dropped a set at the Finals since the 2023 final loss to Djokovic—imperious stuff.

Key Match Highlights:

First Set (7-5, 58 minutes): In a rematch of the Paris Masters final, Auger-Aliassime saved break points at 3-2 and a set point at 5-4. But Sinner pounced in the 12th game, creating 0/30 as the Canadian began feeling leg pain. Auger-Aliassime took an off-court medical timeout after the set.

Second Set (6-1, 43 minutes): The No. 8 seed broke early in the second game and never relinquished control. Auger-Aliassime received on-court treatment at 0-3 and 1-4 but was unable to recover. Sinner won 89% (32/36) of first-serve points and closed out cleanly. He improved to 4-2 in their ATP Head2Head series.

Post-Match Quotes (SInner)

It was a very tough match until 6-5. I had some chances to break. He served very well, except that I missed a return once, but it can happen. He played some very aggressive tennis, so I’m happy to have overcome a very tough test today. Obviously, winning the first match is crucial in this competition and its format. I’m very happy. I hope it‘s nothing too serious. I wish him obviously a very speedy recovery, and hopefully, he is back to 100 per cent physically. You still have to be very consistent, with a great balance on the court. Especially mentally, it is a bit different, but at the same time, it is an advantage. You have to say that. You have to use it in the right way, even if you don’t want it to be like this. Sinner on his win.

Broader Context:

  • Match duration: 1 hour, 41 minutes.
  • Sinner’s 2025 stats: Dominant late-season form, now 1-0 in RR play.
  • Year-End No. 1 race: Trails Alcaraz by ~1,050 points post-RR1; must win the tournament outright and hope Alcaraz falters to reclaim top spot.
  • Next: Wednesday vs. Alexander Zverev in the Bjorn Borg Group.
