Warning: This episode includes SPOILERS for Hazbin Hotel season 2, episode 2!
Hazbin Hotel season 2 dropped a major truth bomb about Lilith that’s bound to shake up Charlie Morningstar’s world. The Vivziepop TV show has returned to Prime Video with all-new episodes, picking up the story just one month after the last extermination. However, unlike the first season, Hazbin Hotel season 2 tells the story from both Hell’s and Heaven’s perspectives.
In addition to continuing Sir Pensive’s storyline, the POV shift allows the audience to learn more about Heaven’s residents. The angels aren’t as unshakable as they seem. There’s a power struggle brewing between Lute and Abel, the new leader of Heaven’s army. However, perhaps the most emotionally devastating reveal centers on Charlie Morningstar’s mother, Lilith.
Season 1’s ending gave a glimpse of the Hazbin Hotel character, and season 2 builds on it, expanding our understanding of Charlie Morningstar’s mom. While her screentime is limited, every moment with Lilith is highly impactful. What’s more, her season 2 screentime reveals a truth that’s bound to hurt Charlie.
Season 2 Reveals Lilith Knows Charlie Is Struggling & Ignores Her Calls
Hazbin Hotel‘s Lilith has been away for seven years, and Charlie supposes that she must be off doing something important since she isn’t in contact with her daughter. She only ever speaks about her mother with admiration and reverence. At no point does she suspect that her uncaring mother is lying on a beach in Heaven.
This makes it all the more devastating to learn in Hazbin Hotel season 2 episode 2 that Lilith knows Charlie is struggling, but she doesn’t seem to care. When she opens her phone, she is inundated with texts, calls, and voicemails from her daughter.
Despite this, Lilith doesn’t bother to reach out to console her daughter, even though she’s clearly in crisis. Unless we learn later on that she is restricted from contacting Charlie, Lilith’s actions seem cruel and cold-hearted. As incompetent as he may be, Lucifer at least tries to show up for Charlie and mend their relationship.
Charlie Won’t Handle This News Well In Hazbin Hotel
While she puts on a hopelessly optimistic front, Charlie Morningstar shows throughout season 1 and 2 that she has deep insecurities related to perceived rejection and abandonment. She constantly seeks praise and validation from the people she loves. Any time she thinks she’s being abandoned or rejected, she internalizes it. Most of this can be attributed to Lucifer’s emotional distance.
It doesn’t help that her mother left her seven years ago, but she at least has the protective belief that her mother is a hero, off doing something grand. The lack of contact leaves room for Charlie to fill in the gaps. However, now that we know Lilith actively ignored her, I’m worried about Charlie.
The daughter of Hell is bound to experience some emotional devastation down the line now if the truth comes out. Based on her past behaviors, I can’t see her being able to cope with the news that her mother knew she was suffering and didn’t care enough to reach out.
After all, she doesn’t have a makeshift mother figure, the way she does a father figure. At least with Lucifer’s distance, she could lean on Alastor. Hopefully, Charlie will be able to lean on Vaggie and her friends when she learns about her mother’s actions, or lack thereof, in Hazbin Hotel.
