With his third win in New York, Novak has gone one step further than last year, booking his place in the round of 16 at the US Open.
The Serbian star and No. 7 seed battled past world No. 35 Cameron Norrie in the third round after two hours and 50 minutes of play, scoring a 3–1 victory: 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-3.
The opening set was a hard-fought affair, with the key moment coming in the seventh game when Novak broke Norrie’s serve to seize the advantage. At 5-4 he called for a medical timeout due to back discomfort, but it proved to be nothing serious. Returning to the court, he held serve convincingly to close out the set 6-4.
The second set followed a similar pattern. Novak created three consecutive break chances in the seventh game but couldn’t convert. His serve held up throughout, but the set ultimately went to a tie-break. Despite leading 3-1, he allowed Norrie to swing the momentum with five straight points, and a costly double fault sealed the set 7-4 in the Briton’s favor.
Norrie came out firing in the third, breaking Novak in the opening game after saving two points at 15-40. The response was immediate – Djokovic struck back in the very next game on his third break chance. From there, the Serb took full control, stringing together three breaks and wrapping up the set 6-2.
By the fourth set, Norrie had no answers left. Novak broke early in the second game and never looked back, cruising to a 6-3 finish and a place in the last 16.
Match stats: aces (18-9), double faults (6-4), winners (50-44), unforced errors (31-34), total points won (127-101).
Next up, Djokovic will face qualifier Jan-Lennard Struff, the world No. 144, who stunned No. 17 seed Frances Tiafoe in straight sets. Novak leads their head-to-head 7–0.
