Day Eight at the US Open belonged to the top seeds as Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, and Taylor Fritz all advanced in straight sets to book their places in the quarterfinals.

Djokovic showed no trouble against Jan-Lennard Struff, despite frequent physio visits. Alcaraz remained flawless through four rounds, with another composed win over Arthur Rinderknech.

Fritz was clinical in dispatching Tomas Machac, again standing as the last American in the draw. Jiri Lehecka also continued his steady progress, overcoming Adrian Mannarino in four sets to reach his second Slam quarterfinal

Novak Djokovic def. Jan-Lennard Struff, 6-3, 6-3, 6-2

Novak Djokovic cruised past qualifier Jan-Lennard Struff 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 to reach the US Open quarter-finals for the 14th time on Sunday.

I mentioned in my previous post that Djokovic, at 70%, still had too much for Struff, given their head-to-head record, and he secured the win in just one hour and 49 minutes.

Novak broke six times and won 85% of his first-serve points, with the only real blemish being several visits from the physio for his neck, leg, and various other ailments.

Earlier in the tournament, all the talk was about how poor he looked in his opening match, but he’s now into the last eight. Can he go further? Fritz is next, who has an equally poor H2H record, so probably.

It definitely helps if you serve well. I think I had a great serving performance in the last round and also tonight. I just saw the stats, I out-served one of the guys who had the most aces during the tournament this year, so that’s a great stat. Obviously, that helps make my life easier on the court. Maybe I don’t need to work as hard or unnecessarily more than I have to. Djokovic on his serving display.

Carlos Alcaraz def. Arthur Rinderknech, 7-6(3), 6-3, 6-4

Carlos Alcaraz powered past Arthur Rinderknech 7-6(3), 6-3, 6-4 to and it’s the first time he’s made the last eight at a Grand Slam without dropping a set.

The pair had met previously in New York in 2021, and in all three prior meetings, Rinderknech had made Alcaraz work to secure the win.

Today was no different, with the first set going to a tie break, but from there, Alcaraz was in full control of things, breaking once in each set to get the job done.

The Spaniard hit 36 winners to 11 unforced errors and won 76% of points behind his second serve. He won’t lose matches with those numbers, and he’s yet to be really tested in the first four rounds.

Taylor Fritz def. Tomas Machac, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3

Taylor Fritz delivered a statement 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 win over 21st seed Tomas Machac, and he’s yet again the last American standing at a Grand Slam.

Machac had looked impressive in his three matches, but he was way off the pace against Fritz, providing very little fight, winning just 19% of return points

Fritz fired 14 aces, won 91% of first-serve points, and faced no break points to set up a showdown with Djokovic. Can he finally record a win in H2H?
