Day Two at the US Open saw the marquee names steadily open their campaigns, a couple of seeded upsets, and a handful of five-set battles.
Carlos Alcaraz, sporting a new buzzcut, opened his title quest with a composed win over Reilly Opelka, while fellow seeds Casper Ruud, Frances Tiafoe, Andrey Rublev, and Jack Draper all advanced in straight or four sets.
But it wasn’t smooth sailing across the board: Adam Walton stunned 22nd seed Ugo Humbert, Coleman Wong and Lloyd Harris both ousted higher-ranked opposition, and Jenson Brooksby and Flavio Cobolli came through marathon five-setters to reach round two.
With Holger Rune, Karen Khachanov, and Cameron Norrie also progressing, the field is beginning to take shape, while the likes of Francisco Comesana (upset Michelsen) and Joao Fonseca added their names to the list of early dark horses.
Day Three now shifts the spotlight to World No. 1 Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Lorenzo Musetti as they begin their Flushing Meadows campaigns.

Recap of the Day

Carlos Alcaraz def. Reilly Opelka, 6-4, 7-5, 6-4
Carlos Alcaraz, debuting his new buzzcut, powered past big-serving Reilly Opelka 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 to launch his 2025 US Open campaign.
The World No. 2 absorbed Opelka’s aggressive serving and heavy groundstrokes, breaking in each set to get the job done, and despite Opelka’s gung-ho-like tactics, Alcaraz’s baseline consistency proved the difference.
Federer was the master at that approach when he faced the likes of Karlovic, Isner, Roddick, etc, coming up with a break late in the set, and although Carlos wasn’t ruthless (3/11 on break points), his athleticism was the difference.
He faces the talented Mattia Bellucci next, aiming to avoid last year’s second-round upset.
Today was a really difficult one against a really great player. “With [Reilly’s] serve, I couldn’t get that rhythm I wanted to get in the match, but just really happy with everything I’ve done today. I think the return was one of the best things I did today and then I just tried to pay my best tennis, be focused on the serve. I think overall, I did a great performance today. Alcaraz on his win.
Casper Ruud def. Sebastian Ofner, 6-1, 6-2, 7-6(5)
Casper Ruud cruised into the US Open second round with a 6-1, 6-2, 7-6(5) win over Sebastian Ofner.
Both guys are more at home on clay, but Ruud is a former finalist here, and he dominated the first two sets in 48 minutes, breaking four times, but faced a tougher third set as Ofner forced a tiebreak.
Frances Tiafoe def. Yoshihito Nishioka, 6-3, 7-6(6), 6-3
Frances Tiafoe thrilled the home crowd with a 6-3, 7-6(6), 6-3 victory over Yoshihito Nishioka to reach the second round.
Nishioka can be a bit of a pest with his retrieving, typically delivers in New York as he thrives on the crowd and he’s made at least the quarters in his last three appearances.
Andrey Rublev def. Dino Prizmic, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4
Andrey Rublev dispatched qualifier Dino Prizmic 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in a straightforward US Open first-round win, wrapping up in two hours
The 15th seed leaned on his baseline firepower, and I think he will have a solid run here in New York as he appears more settled under Safin, so the last eight or even last four don’t seem that far out of reach.
Flavio Cobolli def. Francesco Passaro, 7-5, 5-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3
Flavio Cobolli battled past qualifier Francesco Passaro 7-5, 5-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to secure his US Open second-round spot. The 24th seed, who had a poor start to the year but bounced back into form, broke seven times and won 71% of first-serve points in a three-hour, 42-minute clash
Jack Draper def. Federico Agustin Gomez, 6-4, 7-5, 6-7(7), 6-2
Jack Draper powered past qualifier Federico Agustin Gomez 6-4, 7-5, 6-7(7), 6-2 to reach the US Open second round.
The fifth seed, playing his first match since Wimbledon, fired 14 aces and converted four of nine break points, rebounding after dropping the third-set tiebreak.
