ATP Finals 2025 Day Four Recap

Day four of the 2025 Nitto ATP Finals saw Felix Auger-Aliassime defy injury doubts to edge Ben Shelton in a tense three-set comeback, while Jannik Sinner booked his spot in the semifinals with another composed win over Alexander Zverev. The Italian extended his unbeaten indoor streak to 28 matches, keeping his faint hopes of the year-end No. 1 alive.

With one round-robin match remaining in each group, there are still three semi-final spots left to play for, but fans (and the ATP money men) will be hoping that Alcaraz tops his group to avoid a Sinner semi-final showdown.

Are there any scenarios where Carlos won’t make it? Yes, ff Musetti beats Alcaraz in 2 sets, Fritz wins the group if he beats De Minaur (in 2 or 3 sets) and Musetti finishes 2nd either way. It’s hard to see that happening, as I don’t think Musetti has the legs to do it.

Felix Auger-Aliassime kept his Nitto ATP Finals semi-final hopes alive with a gritty 4-6, 7-6(7), 7-5 comeback victory over Ben Shelton in Turin on Wednesday, moving to 1-1 in the Bjorn Borg Group.

After seeing the Canadian hobble around the court on Monday, I thought he would be calling his ATP Finals a day, allowing Bublik in as an alternate, but he showed absolutely zero sign of any injury, which was a big surprise.

Key Match Highlights:

First Set (4-6, 38 minutes): Shelton dominated early with aggressive serve-and-volley tactics. Auger-Aliassime struggled to find his rhythm, and despite breaking back for 4-5, he dropped serve again immediately to drop the set.

Second Set (7-6(7), 58 minutes): Aliassime saved a break point in game seven and forged a 5-2 lead in the tie-break, but Shelton rallied to save three set points; however, a double-fault on the fourth handed Auger-Aliassime the set

Third Set (7-5, 49 minutes): The Canadian found his return game, engaged in rallies, holding two break points in game four before finally breaking late after consistent pressure to convert his third match point.

Post-Match Quotes (Auger-Aliassime):

He was playing much better than me at the start. It’s not often that I get broken twice in the first set indoors… It was a weird start, but as the match went on, I was finding ways to put returns in the court. Once we engaged in the rallies, I felt like I could win more. You just have to fight, believe, and play the next point the right way. I felt great, physically. We recovered well, did the right things. Today, I was able to play two and a half hours of high-intensity tennis. I have to give him credit; he kept coming up with great serves. When the opponent plays that well, you have to give him credit, but also to myself for staying cool. Auger-Aliassime on his win.

Broader Context:

  • Match duration: 2 hours, 25 minutes.
  • Silenced injury concerns from Monday’s loss to Sinner (left calf); moved freely throughout.
  • Indoor record: 86 wins and 7 titles
  • Group standing: 1-1; still in SF contention.
  • Next: Friday vs. Alexander Zverev in final round-robin match.

Jannik Sinner (2) def. Alexander Zverev (3) 6-4 6-3

Jannik Sinner clinched his semi-final spot at the 2025 Nitto ATP Finals with a commanding 6-4, 6-3 victory over Alexander Zverev in Turin on Wednesday night, moving to 2-0 in the Bjorn Borg Group.

It was an interesting match, with Sinner proving again that he’s just a level ahead of Zverev right now, as he plays with more intensity and doesn’t let up when he’s on the front foot.

Despite that, I thought Sascha played well in parts, but he just doesn’t do enough of the right things at the right time. Sinner played clutch on most break points, but Zverev’s tendencies just to roll the ball in or refuse to tee off on a shot when he has the upper hand always prove costly.

Key Match Highlights:

First Set (6-4, 42 minutes): Sinner saved two break points in the opening game with four aces. He broke at 5-4 after winning a 17-ball rally on his third set point when Zverev mistimed a forehand.

Second Set (6-3, 38 minutes): Sinner faced 0/40 in his second service game but saved all three break points with first-serve winners. Zverev held another break point at 2-2 30/40, but Sinner escaped before breaking decisively at 4-3 and closed out comfortably. Saved all seven break points faced (12 aces total).

Post-Match Context:

  • Match duration: 1 hour, 20 minutes.
  • Fifth straight win over Zverev; improves to 6-4 in head-to-head (Zverev’s last win: 2023 US Open).
  • Streak: Extends indoor hard-court win streak to 28 matches; hasn’t dropped a set in Turin since 2023 final.
  • First to reach SFs; will face Ben Shelton in final RR match.

Post Match Quotes (Sinner):

We both changed a little bit tactically, so I felt like we both were trying to hit quite fast, quite flat. But I’m very happy with how I returned his serve. It’s very difficult. One of the best serves in the game. The group I’m in, with Sascha and Ben, it’s very difficult to return their serves Sinner on his win.

Broader Context:

  • Year-End No. 1 race: Must win title undefeated, and Alcaraz must lose Thursday to Musetti to stand any chance of reclaiming No. 1.
  • Alcaraz (2-0) is virtually in the SFs (only 2 possible scenarios where he doesn’t qualify); he faces Musetti on Thursday.
  • Next: Friday vs. Ben Shelton in final round-robin match.
