Terrifying moment car towing caravan loses control on motorway as it overtakes lorry before flipping onto hard shoulder

THIS is the terrifying moment a car towing a caravan loses control on a motorway as it overtakes a lorry before flipping onto the hard shoulder.

Shocking dashcam footage was captured by a lorry driver while driving down the motorway in Worcestershire when the horror unfolded last month.

The footage shows Lee Flower, from Trowbridge, Wiltshire, cruising behind another lorry on October 9.

A red car races into view towing a caravan on the M5 near Evesham and attempts to overtake the lorry in front of Lee.

As it does so, the caravan starts to violently swerve from side to side in the middle lane.

Quickly losing control, the vehicle veers in front of the lorry before crashing into the hard shoulder.

The caravan can be seen rolling onto its side before it comes to rest upside-down with its wheels facing the sky.

Smoke fills the air and debris is scattered across the hard shoulder of the motorway.

Fortunately, the lorry driver had slammed on the breaks and pulled the 15.5 tonne vehicle onto the hard shoulder as the caravan was swerving down the road.

Driver Andrew Marsden, 48, said he was just 10ft away from smashing into the car and killing the motorist.

He added that if he had been carrying more weight he would not have been able to prevent a fatal collision.

Miraculously, the driver of the car towing the caravan escaped unscathed.

Andrew, from Worcestershire, was left shaken by the incident and told MailOnline that it went “really wrong, really quickly”.

“I just gripped the steering wheel, put my foot on the break and hoped for the best,” he said.

He added: “The HGV is still 15.5 tonnes empty and if that goes through him that’s going to kill him and I don’t think I could drive again after that.”

Lee Flower who recorded the shocking scenes said it could have been “a lot worse” and it was fortunate nobody died.

He said he was going to overtake the lorry himself before he saw the caravan “wobbling”.

He added that he thought it was “going to get messy pretty quickly” and praised the lorry driver for stopping.

But Lee admitted it was “lucky” the lorry in front was empty otherwise “he might have gone straight through him”.

A spokesperson for National Highways said: “The incident took place at the side of the road and did not therefore impact on our network other than increased congestion.

“We did not need to impose a road closure while the vehicles were recovered.”

West Mercia Police confirmed they had been called about the incident but did not attend as National Highways managed the situation.

Elsewhere, shocking video footage shows the moment a lorry driver ploughs into stationary traffic at 50mph that sent a car flipping on its roof.

The driver, from the North East, was travelling in his Mercedes HGV on the A27 in Chichester, West Sussex, when he smashed into stationary vehicles, leaving three people with life-changing serious injuries.
