WHAT An 1889 house with eight bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms that was owned and occupied by Lizzie Borden after she was acquitted of murdering her father and stepmother
HOW MUCH $799,000
SIZE 3,935 square feet
PRICE PER SQUARE FOOT $203
SETTING This Queen Anne Victorian is in the Highlands historic district, an upscale section that was known as the Hill when Lizzie Borden and her sister, Emma Borden, bought the house in 1893 and named it Maplecroft. Almost completely restored with the help of historians, the home is being sold with all of its period-appropriate furnishings and decorative objects. It has a variance to be operated as a bed-and-breakfast.
INDOORS The entrance foyer has parquet floors, reproduction Victorian wallpaper and a fireplace — one of six in the house. All of the woodwork is original, including the main staircase, but a powder room tucked beneath the stairs is a mid-20th-century addition. Around 1909, Lizzie Borden enclosed the front porch and added a back porch.
The first-floor parlor is large enough to dwarf the grand piano in the corner. The dining room has a coffered ceiling and original wallpaper. The kitchen was recently gutted, given a freshly painted tin ceiling and equipped with appliances from the 1920s and ’30s.
The second-floor bedrooms include a long room at the front of the house whose renovated décor was inspired by Nance O’Neil, an actress and close friend of Lizzie Borden. A bedroom with a bay window and adjacent sitting room was believed to have been Ms. Borden’s before she moved to a master suite with a brick fireplace on the second floor of the addition. The room probably used by Emma Borden is next to a bathroom that has its original fixtures.
The third floor has an additional three bedrooms and a bathroom.
OUTDOOR SPACE The three-color exterior paint job matches the home’s original hues. The .41-acre double lot has trees and shrubs that have survived from the Bordens’ era. A large carriage house-turned-garage holds up to three cars.
